Children of Men

View Date: 7/31/09

This movie is of the end-of-the-world genre, in that humanity has not had a child born in over 18 years. No one has been able to determine the cause of the infertility. Clive Owen's character, after surviving a bombing at his local coffee shop, gets kidnapped by his ex-wife. She asks for his help by getting papers for a girl to leave England, which is the only non-destroyed country left in the world.

As it turns out, the persons for whom the papers are intended is a young pregnant refugee who will be sent to a concentration camp if discovered. The radical group trying to protect her believes that the government will take her baby and use it for their own gain. However, their intentions are not very noble, either. He then works to save her and protect the soon-to-be youngest person on the planet.

This was a very dark drama, really gritty in appearance and subject manner. I thought it was a really intriguing concept for this genre, and not one I had encountered before. While I did enjoy this movie, I can't overwhelmingly exclaim that this movie was great. I think that may be due more to the film type than the movie itself. I thought this was very well made, and perfectly suited to the subject matter.

10 words or less: Subject matter was handled very well.
