The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

I have seen this series several times on TV, but don't seek it out, as it's usually up against other shows I follow. I've always thought that it was a cute show, and could appreciate the geek humor being very much a geek myself.

I recently got Season 1 disk 1 from Netflix, which had the first 6 episodes of this series. My mom and I watched all six episodes in one night, and were constantly cracking up throughout the evening. My dad kept commenting on how much we were laughing.

As a scientist and a self-proclaimed geek, I truly appreciate the humor involved, probably more than some others. The next disk coming my way will be Season 1 disk 2, and I am eagerly anticipating its arrival.

Lucifer

Author: Mike Carey, et. al
Completed:
Volume 1: Devil in the Gateway: 6/25/09
Volume 2: Children and Monsters: 12/23/09
Volume 3: A Dalliance with the Damned 12/27/09

The Lucifer books are a series of graphic novels based on a character from the Sandman comic/graphic novel series. The books were very visually stimulating, and the story line was OK. As a woman, I can definitely appreciate Lucifer's appearance, especially when he has wings. Evidently, his appearance was based on David Bowie, and you can definitely see that.

10 words or less: I'm going to keep reading the series.

The Cleaner

Airing: Tuesdays at 10:00pm on A&E

This show stars Benjamin Bratt as William Banks, a man who feels that he has had a calling from God to help people get sober after he cleaned up his own life. He is surrounded by a group of other former users, several of whom he helped get clean, who now help him help others.

I have enjoyed this show since the first episode last year. I know other A&E shows have received critical acclaim, and I feel this one should receive more than it does. Perhaps this show does not receive much critical notice due to the nature of the story line. I think this show is produced very well, and the acting is excellent. The supporting cast has been seen in many other shows, including Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica and various family movies. The series also gets an amazing array of well-known guest stars.

While the stories are dark, worse things can be seen on the nightly news. It also deals with everyday issues, such as separation and divorce, family fights, and teenage/parental arguments. I highly recommend people check this show out at least once.

10 words or less: A very absorbing show.

Charlie Bartlett

This movie is about a teenage boy from a dysfunctional family that attends public school after being expelled from yet another private school. In order to make friends in his new environment, he begins holding therapy sessions in a school bathroom and providing prescriptions to treat various mental disorders. He eventually admits to boyh himself and others that he is only a kid and not able to adequately deal with his own problems let alone those of others.

I was greatly looking forward to this movie, and it did not disappoint. Anton Yelchin did a lovely job portraying Charlie. He was able to get across the struggles of living a priveliged teenage life without becoming obnoxious like some real life wealthy teenagers. Kat Dennings was once again wonderful, although she seems to always play the same character, and that seems to be closely related to herself. Robert Downey Jr. had another excellent performance, and I wish he had more screen time.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, for it had a little of everything. It had enough laughs to keep you entertained, some drama and some suspense. I was rooting for Charlie, and was happy with the way things turned out.

10 words or less: Everything I expected it to be.

Dead Until Dark

Author: Charlaine Harris

This is a novel in the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris, also known as the Sookie Stackhouse series. This series was recent adapted for HBO into the series True Blood.

I had been wanting to start watching True Blood, and have the first season on my Netflix queue, but decided that I wanted to read the books, at least the first in the series, prior to viewing.

I enjoyed this book. I wouldn't call it one of my favorite books, or even one of the best vampire novels I've read, but it kept my interest and had a good story line. I look forward to reading teh rest of the series, which I have already requested from the library.

10 words or less: Good read for vampire afficinados.

Wild America

This film, released in 1997, is based on the true story of the creator of the Wild America television show. It stars several former teen idols who have since pretty much dropped off into obscurity.

I'm generally a fan of movies based on real life, and this was no exception. This story of three brothers was exciting with both beautiful scenes as well as peril which had me gasping. It showed the determination of the oldest brother, and the confusion yet enthusiasm of the middle brother. The youngest brother was involved in getting many of the best and most dangerous film clips of the movie. It is no wonder that he went on to film scenes with totally non-dangerous animals.

10 words or less: Enjoyable family movie based on real events.

Beerfest

I love this movie! Now let me be objective. This is a movie by the guys of Broken Lizard, the same ones that did Super Troopers. It is about a pair of brothers that compete in a beerfest in Germany as Team USA and fail miserably. They are run out in shame, and vow to come back and win the following year. They were totally unprepared the first year because their grandfather had never told them about their legacy in the brewing business.

After they return to the states, they start compiling their team from old college friends and the like. Then they start training. Of course, they have to be proficient in all of the classic beer games, such as quarters and beer pong. They go through trials and tribulations, find out things they really didn't want to know about their family, and get really drunk.

Everyone I know loved Super Troopers. I must say that movie is growing on me, but I still don't think it's as good as everyone says. However, I loved Beerfest from the first time I saw it. I have seen it many times since, and just grow more and more fond of it. There is humor in it for everyone, and it is a very fun way to spend a few hours.

10 words or less: Love it, love it, love it.

Lucky's Coffee Shop

Location: Wilmington, DE

We've been going to Lucky's since we first moved to the Wilmington area, and it is wonderful. At least some members of the family go about once a week. You get good food for a good price, and it's a fun atmosphere. We enjoy playing cards while we wait for our food, and often go after a nice workout. It's also got a good location along Rt. 202, which is the main shopping drag along the Delaware side of the border with Pennsylvania.

10 words or less: Check it out if you're in the area.

SYTYCD

Well, the eliminations really didn't surprise me tonight. Asuka is wonderful in her own style, but didn't have the range of the other dancers. I still don't get what the judges see in Caitlin, but she did perform better than Asuka this week.

As for the guys, I'm not surprised at all to see Jonathan go home. He was definitely one of the weaker guys, and just couldn't compete with the likes of Ade or Brandon. It could have been either Jonathan or Vitolio, but I think they made a good choice.

The competition keeps getting tougher as we near the top 10. The dancers will really have to step it up next week, because some truly great dancers with fantastic stage presence will be going home soon.

10 words or less: Looking forward to even better dancing soon.

Top Chef: Masters (Bravo)

View Date: 6/24/09

Group 3 Chefs: Wilo Benet, Cindy Pawlcyn, Ludo Lefebvre, Rick Bayless

Quickfire Challenge: The chefs first had to draw knives that came out of the block with colors. They had to prepare dishes based solely on the color of the knife they chose. Wilo chose orange, Cindy had yellow, Ludo chose red, and Rick had green. With all of the dishes being basically a single color, some of them look kind of putrid, particularly the green dish. And the winner was Wilo's orange dish due to the huge flavor, even though he left the ring on his tartar mold.

Elimination Challenge: The chefs then found out that they had to create street food for the general public using one key (i.e. unusual) protein. After drawing knives, Wilo got beef hearts, Rick was given tongue, Cindy got tripe (stomach), and Ludo was provided pig's ears. They will then have to convince the general public to try these unusual foods.

I think my biggest problem with the Masters version of Top Chef is that it's kind of boring. You don't have the same sense of competition that you do in the standard series. It could be that the chefs playing for charity, but I think it is more that the chefs are already established and aren't trying to establish themselves in the culinary world. They have well-established, sometimes world-renowned restaurants to go home to. Perhaps just competing for competition purposes just isn't enough for this show.

The winner of the elimination challenge, and the chef going on in the competition, is Rick by quite a bit. He probably had the easiest time, considering he made something he is very familiar with and used a protein that he loves. He was the most well-known of the competitors in this round, and I'm kind of glad he won. He now knows how it feels to compete instead of just judge.

10 words or less: Still not sold on it, but will stick it out.

SYTYCD

This week's competition episode showcases the top 16 dancers. Cat's dress looks really good on her, but it does make her look really flat. The guest judge tonight is Toni Basil, best known for the song "Mickey", but is also a world-renowned hip-hop and pop choreographer.

Karla and Jonathan: This couple started off the night with a Dave Scott hip-hop routine. This is a rare appearance for Dave Scott, so we'll see how the routine looks. I absolutely couldn't keep my eyes off of Karla. She just really seemed to get the music and routine, it just really seemed to work for her. Jonathan was basically invisible to me, and when I did see him, he was pretty bad. Nigel just really doesn't seem to like smooth hip-hop routines. (Mom- Jonathan did the steps, but he didn't do it with his heart and soul.) I really think that the judges should have looked at them a little bit more as separate dancers, but I understand that they are still being judged as couples. I fear for this couple, but I really think he brought the whole routine down.

Asuka and Vitolio: This couple performed a Mandy Moore jazz routine. Parts of the routine were phenomenal, including the lifts. They were relatively in unison throughout the routine, and I thought that it was pretty good overall. Mary was right that they really got into the characters given to them by the choreographer. I also agree with the judges that this couple is developing their chemistry well. They may not have had the instant chemistry of some couples, but it is growing each week.

Melissa and Ade: This couple danced a Tony Meredith rumba. This couple is just gorgeous! The routine was beautiful, almost too beautiful for words. I usually enjoy rumba routines, and tonight was no difference. This couple should make it to the top 5, and may even be the couple to beat. He may have struggled during the rehersals, but he is a fantastic partner in a very masculine way, and she uses it to both of their advantages.

Janette and Brandon: This couple is dancing a Dave Scott hip-hop routine. You know, I always like it when they use a throne as a prop (leftovers from the two princes routine?). (Mom- they're hitting it, and they have the synchronization.) This was a much more hard-hitting routine, but they also performed their routine so much better than the other hip-hop couple. I do agree with Nigel that they did outstanding jobs for being so far outside of their element.

Kayla and Kupono: This couple is dancing together for the first time, competing with a Jean Marc Genereux Viennese Waltz. This was a very pretty routine, and they seemed to work really well together. The backdrop as well as her dress were both very nice for the routine, and she is also absolutely stunning. The only flaw I saw in the routine was a few of the couple-based turns had some bobbles. Based on the routines we've seen so far tonight, I think this couple might be safe. But considering what happened last week, you never can tell what America will do.

Randi and Evan: This couple is dancing a Mia Michaels contemporary routine tonight. I'm wondering how her husband feels about this routine. I thought that it was fun, and not like most Mia Michaels routines. I really enjoyed this, and this couple really plays characters well. A really enjoyable routine overall, and I agree with pretty much everything the judges said. The routine totally transported me to France, and I could just picture a couple strolling along a river in Paris. And while Melissa and Kayla are stunning, Randi is adorable.

Caitlin and Jason: This couple danced a Jean Marc Genereux Paso Doble. Their costumes look very much out of the Roman gladiator arena, and it was very nice to see a routine using this music. It could have been a very powerful dance, and definitely had the makings of one, it was once again dragged down by her. She was quite weak, and could have been so much sharper. For some reason, the judges are really liking her, but I just don't see it. I think that if they make it to the top 10 dancers, he will be much stronger without her.

Jeanine and Phillip: This couple is dancing a Tyce DiOrio broadway routine. Ooh, another prop! (Mom- He made the jump over the couch look effortless.) He's not making the same kind of faces with the lifts this week, either. (Mom- He looks a little like Jerry Lewis.) He danced well even through the split pants. I enjoyed this routine, but I do agree with some of what the judges said. I thought that, when looking back over the routines, it was one of the weaker dances.

Top three couples: Melissa/Ade, Janette/Brandon, Randi/Evan

Bottom three: Karla/Jonathan, Caitlin/Jason, Jeanine/Phillip

10 words or less: And in the end, they all played with feathers.

Yes Man

View Date: 6/18/09

This wonderful movie stars Zooey Deschanel and Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey plays a character that changes his life by saying "yes" to every opportunity that comes his way. Zooey Deschanel's character plays a young woman who lives her life spontaneously. The two meet on the first day of his new outlook, then meet again several days later.

This was very much a feel-good movie, with his character learning that real fun in life can be had if you are open to the opportunity. While the movie had Jim Carrey's physical humor, it was not overly highlighted, and it was also not the only humor featured. Zooey always plays the quirky girl character so well that it might be nice to see her try something a little different.

The only real problem I had with the movie was the age difference between the two main characters. While that could be considered a part of the keeping-an-open-mind motif, it just seemed a little awkward to me.

10 words or less: A very enjoyably movie with a pertinent message.

Life in the Freezer

Viewing Completion Date: 6/22/09

This was a 6-part documentary I picked up on Netflix regarding life in and around Antarctica. It featured a wide variety of animals, including humpback whales, seals, and numerous varieties of penguins. While the filming for this feature was unbelievable, and filming techniques are shown in the sixth segment, I must say I have seen better. The species variety was very nice, and there were some adorable images, it was not as satisfying as I hoped. The hunting scenes were probably the best part of the movie, as well as the educational aspect.

10 words or less: March of the Penguins is a much better flick.

The Airborne Toxic Event

Artist: The Airborne Toxic Event

Prior to picking up this album, I had heard this band's "Some Time Around Midnight" on the radio and was very impressed. While I wouldn't call this an upbeat song, it does have a memorable tune and absorbing lyrics. However, this is really the only song on the album that sounds like this. Most of the other songs were pretty indistinguisable for me: they sounded the same and lasted for about the same amount of time.

If I had it to do over again, I would probably just pick up that one song and leave the rest of the album alone.

10 albums or less: If you like the radio releases, skip the album.

Tinted Windows

Artist: Tinted Windows

Tinted Windows is a new supergroup made up of artists from several bands I have listened to in the past. It is comprised of:

James Iha, formerly of Smashing Pumpkins
Taylor Hanson, formerly of Hanson
Adam Schlesinger, formerly of Fountains of Wayne, and
Bun E. Carlos, formerly of Cheap Trick.

This album was a lot more pop-y than I thought it was going to be, considering who is in the band. Honestly, based on what has been released, this band harkens back to pop music of the late 80's and early 90's. Maybe because it wasn't what I expected, I wasn't all that impressed with the album in general. It was also very short, with 11 two to three minute songs. Overall, I think was expecting more than was actually delivered.

10 words or less: Disappointing at best.

Your Heart Belongs to Me

Author: Dean Koontz
Completed: 6/18/09

This was a stand-alone book that follows Koontz's general suspense layout, with spooky things happening throughout the story that may be due to the supernatural. The story was split into three parts. Unfortunately, I thought this story really dragged through part one and most of part two. While somewhat interesting, it had to provide the background of the characters, but didn't really make me get involved with them. The parts where the main character was suspicious were somewhat intriguing, but I believe it took me several weeks to get through the first half of the book. It just didn't grab me.

Then, I read the last 150 pages in less than a day. The story definitely picked up, and the supernatural aspect was also explored more. I started to feel for the main character like I was there with him. All of the supernatural phenomenon are explained in what I will call the culminating scene, considering the last chapter seemed more like an epilogue to me. I was right there with the character, feeling every hit of a bullet, experiencing the flickering light of candles and oil lamps, etc.

The last chapter was absolutely exquisite. It left me very satisfied, and made me wish the first part of the book had grabbed my attention sooner just so I could get to that point.

Overall, the book was OK because the first part was cumbersome, but the end was thoroughly satisfying.

10 words or less: OK, but fantasticly satisfying ending.

SYTYCD- Elimination Week 2

So, this is the first time this season that I disagree with both America and the judges. I'm sure it will not be my last.

I was kind of, no, make that very shocked that Kayla and Max were in the bottom three couples. I thought they did very well in their number on Wednesday. I figure that it was probably because of the routine, that the viewers just didn't get Brian Friedman's choreography. Either way, I figured that they were absolutely safe once the announcement was made.

After watching the solos, I felt that, no matter how much I like her, Ashley's was the weakest. Caitlin still annoys the snot out of me, but she did have a more powerful solo. Of the guys, I thought that Kupono was the weakest for his solo. Not only that, I thought that Ashley and Kupono were the weakest in their choregraphed numbers the night before as well.

So when the judges came back and announced their decisions, I wasn't surprised to see Ashley sent packing. But for the guys, I was saddened and disappointed that Max got the boot. I thought that he has been much more consistent, even looking back at the audition footage. I wouldn't say that he was my favorite dancer, but he definitely had partnering skills and I thought he did really well the past two weeks. I think the biggest problem was that his personality, that you see in the behind-the-scenes footage, wasn't showing as much in the dances. He portrayed the characters he was given brilliantly, but wasn't showing enough of himself. When I look back at previous ballroom dancers on the show, Pasha made it the farthest because of his personality. Demitri made it as far as he did mainly because women voters liked to see him shirtless. Max, although a spectacular dancer, hadn't won over the audience yet. Then again, maybe the judges didn't want to risk Kayla being in the bottom three again. Unfortunately, if that was a consideration, I think they made a mistake in keeping Kupono.

After saying all that, neither Max nor Kupono are in my top 5 guys. Those would still be Ade, Brandon, Jason, Evan, and Phillip. I'm still not too sure about the girls, especially considering they got rid of one of my favorites, but leaning toward Janette, Kayla, and Randi.

10 words or less: Bye-bye Ashley and Max. :(

Top Chef: Masters (Bravo)

Chefs: Graham Bowles, Suzanne Tracht, Wylie Dufresne, Elizabeth Falkner

Quickfire Challenge: The contestants had to create an amouse bouche of ingredients from a vending machine. The guest judges are Season 2 competitors who completed the original challenge. Suzanne seems to be struggling with the concept of this challenge because of her general cooking style. Some of the creations sound appetizing, but others sound kind of cringe-worthy. I do love Wylie's reaction to the judges comments. Suzanne seems to have made her dish work, even if she had trouble with the concept. Elizabeth had mixed reactions from the judges. Graham's dish went over pretty well. Suzanne used the least ingredients from the vending machines, and wound up winning the challenge.

Elimination Challenge: The chefs had to cook dinner for the creators of Lost, while using only the items that would be found on an island plane crash. The twist is no pantry, and they can only shop from an approved list of canned and preserved ingredients. The shopping scene was as funny or funnier than last week, especially because of the guys in this group. Darlton (Damon Lindelhoff and Carlton Cuse) are quite funny during their interviews, and they seem they are going to be tonight too. Also love the touch of the waiters in Dharma jumpsuits.

Suzanne's food seems to be getting generally good reviews, even though several people don't like her food choices. Graham's food is getting very raving reviews. Wylie's food took a major blow by not having chicken on one of the plates, but he did add some humor to the evening. Suzanne's food got good reviews, but there certainly was a lot of food on the plate.

The judges table was actually very complementary tonight. Wylie definitely made a comeback during the Elimination Challenge round, but not quit enough to win. I would have preferred Graham to win, but Suzanne pulled it off. Fair enough, but I liked Graham's food better.

Overall, I still don't like this format, but the chefs in this episode were more entertaining. I will keep watching, mainly for the guest judges, but I can't wait for the regular season to start up.

10 words or less: Still giving it more time.

SYTYCD

Mom is back as a guest reviewer for the top 18 dancers. Don't think I like Cat Deeley's dress tonight, but we have seen her in worse. Lil' C is the guest judge tonight. I really like him, because he knows his dancing and is quite intelligent. Not as good as Adam Shankman, but one of the better judges who also provides constructive criticism for the dancers while sounding like he knows what he's talking about.

Now on to the dancing!

Randi and Evan: This couple danced a jive tonight. Before the dance, this seems to be right up Evan's alley, even though it's not his style. Randi definitely has a personality that comes across on camera. Evan jumping over Randi got a "Woah" out of all of us. This was a really fun routine, which is what the dancers said they were going for. I love the "fun" counter that they have going through this number. The judges are cutting into Evan's technique somewhat, mostly because they thought he would be better than he was. But Randi definitely did outdance Evan tonight. I thought they were good, and a nice way to start the evening.

Melissa and Ade: This couple danced a jazz routine. Ade is one fine-looking man, and a really good dancer, too. And so powerful, the way he just whips her around! Not sure how I feel about the choreography, but I thought they danced the routine well. I just don't think I'm much of a fan of Sonia's work. (Mom- It will be interesting to see how he does with other partners. And he has a cute smile, too.) I also really like Melissa, and look forward to seeing more from her.

Caitlin and Jason: This couple is dancing a Shane Sparks hip-hop routine. You just gotta love a slow Shane Sparks routine- they tend to be the best. She is not bad, but she doesn't hit all of her moves. In my opinion, she still just annoys me. And her solo in the middle just doesn't really make sense to me. I think she's kind of bringing him down. I still like him, but he's moving down my list a little.

Janette and Brandon: This couple is dancing a disco routine. I fear for them, because I almost never like the disco routines. The flashing lights, while giving the atmosphere of a nightclub, are really distracting. The lifts are amazing, and there seems to be so much trust there between the partners. She covered her slip/trip well at the end. Pretty good for a disco routine, and I think that is because of the dancers. Their talent really shone through, and I think Brandon is finally getting some love from the judges.

Asuka and Vitolio: This couple danced at waltz. The look on his face tends to make him look like he is concentrating too hard. She doesn't really do lovely well; she pulls off overtly sexy much better. It was OK, but I don't know how it will hold up to the other dances tonight. They still didn't have a lot of chemistry together. The judges thought it was beautiful, but I just thought it was so-so.

Kayla and Max: This couple is dancing a Brian Friedman pop/jazz routine. (Mom- Brian Friedman is just weird. She doesn't look very princess-y to me. I don't like the dance in general, but I think they performed it well.) I thought that the dance was much more than I expected from the practice clips. It was odd, it was out there, but that is what made it interesting. I thought that they both did very well, and he's keeping up with her admirably.

Karla and Jonathan: This couple is dancing a contemporary routine by a new choreographer. Very pretty diving lift there, and I think he played his character well. I think I'm going to like this choreographer, because she incorporated many very interesting and unusual moves while still expressing the story. (Mom- I just felt that she was more mesmerizing with her expressions and the like.) The lifts and the combinations of the lifts were phenomenal, both the idea of them and the execution.

Jeanine and Phillip: Yay! A scientist is on the show! :) This couple danced a tango routine. She looks so sexy on that floor tonight that I really don't notice him out there at all. From what I can tell, he seems to be a little stiff, but she seemed unstoppable. Guess they must not have been able to get the higher lifts like they were showing in the intro video. The judges feel like his technique was way sub-par, and Lil' C feels that Phillip lacked confidence throughout the routine. I have to say, I agree with the judges on this one.

Ashley and Kupono: This couple danced a Shane Sparks hip-hop routine. Very interesting concept to this dance, at least the beginning. SOOOOOOO glad they got Shane Sparks back! Thought it was done well and they were in unison when needed, but I guess the judges disagree. I do agree that Ashley was better, but I also really like this couple.

There are definitely more options for the bottom three this week, including: Caitlin/Jason, Asuka/Vitolio, Jeanine/Phillip (though doubtful), and Ashley/Kupono. If it were me, I would get rid of Caitlin and Vitolio. They are great dancers, but probably the weakest this week.

10 words or less: Should be an easier decision this week.

Chinese Democracy

Artist: Guns & Roses

This is the album that has been over 15 years in the making. Honestly, I was incredibly skeptical, even after I heard the first released song. But I was amazed! This is a really good album, reminiscent of old G&R. Even Axl's voice held up pretty well, especially compared to the surprise appearance he made several years ago on an MTV awards show. It is a shame that the album is only 14 songs, because I definitely wanted more. Axl's delay in releasing this album really paid off, no matter how many fans he lost since the most recent G&R release.

10 words or less: The album surprised and amazed me.

Goodfellas

I got to watch this movie today! I realize this movie is around 20 years old, but I had actually never seen it. I have absolutely nothing against mob or gangster movies, and actually really enjoy most of them. But somehow, this never made it onto my must-see list.

This movie was extremely well done, and I can see why it was nominated for so many awards. It kept me interested for the entire 2 1/2 hours, and you could really feel for the characters and feel like part of their lives. I cringed as Tommy and Jimmy both started going nuts.

I now understand why many people consider this a classic, even though it is not that old. This is a movie that everyone should see at least once.

10 words or less: Excellent.

Sick

View Date: 6/15/09

This is a documentary about a man who not only has cystic fibrosis and eventually dies from it, but also is a masochist and an artist who uses his masochism in his art. It is definitely disturbing at times, such as when you see him nail his penis to a board. There are also clips of homemade movies showing him being submissive. Some of these had me symbolically holding my crotch area in sympathetic pain.

However, it also had some hilarious parts as well. To prepare for his art showing, he prepares an invisible man doll to reflect himself with cystic fibrosis. The disease also effects other areas of the body besides the lungs, mostly with bodily fluids emerging from various orifices. This scene is sick and twisted and laugh-out-loud funny.

I probably wouldn't recommend this movie, mostly due to the very graphic nature. The production was OK, and the subject's story is interesting, but definitely not for everyone.

10 words or less: Disturbing, sad, intriguing, sometimes painful to watch, other times hilarious.

Whale Rider

View Date: 6/15/09

This was a very touching and moving story. I cried several times, and really wanted to smack some sense into the grandfather. I realize that he was stuck in tradition, but he also couldn't see what was in front of his face, which was the whole point. I can definitely understand why Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for an Oscar for this role. The cinematography was absolutely stunning. A good movie for a serious drama, but don't expect any laughter.

10 words or less: Visually stunning, moving story.

Odd Hours

By, Dean Koontz
Format: Audio Book
Completed: 6/15/09

This was the fourth book in the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. I really enjoy this series, and especially enjoy listening to these books. The person who read this book is the same person who read several other Dean Koontz novels, including the others in the Odd Thomas series. He really does an excellent job with Koontz's work.

I really like the Odd Thomas books because of the way they combine the supernatural with suspense. I know that Dean Koontz is often classified in the horror genre, but I wouldn't necessarily classify these as horror. There are definitely supernatural forces at work in these stories, and there is always a nefarious plot that needs to be stopped to save the world. It definitely makes for a great read.

Odd Hours follows a similar format to the other books in the series. It was a nice story line, with the main focus being Odd trying to save the world by stopping a dastardly plan. This series is definitely best read in order, however. I listened to one of the later books prior to the first, not knowing the first existed, and was somewhat confused. That did not stop me from enjoying the story, and I made sure to go out and grab the first book as soon as possible. This book refers back many times to the happenings of the previous books, so it is best to have that background prior to reading.

10 words or less: A satisfying continuation of the Odd Thomas story line.

Paper Clips

View Date: 6/15/09

This was a very interesting documentary about a middle school in rural Tennessee. The middle school profiled wanted to teach their children about prejudice and accepting everyone for who they are. However, everyone in the small town is very much the same. One of the teachers came up with the idea of studying the Holocaust. This became known as the Holocaust project.

As the project got underway and the students were discussing how many people died, one student indicated that he couldn't really picture 6 million, as he had never seen it. The students proceeded to do research on the internet and discovered that paper clips were used by Norway in WWII as a Nazi resistance indicator. The students then asked if they could try to collect 6 million paper clips to represent the people who were lost. The movie then documents their collection of the paperclips, and believe me, it is a fascinating story.

This was a decently made documentary with a very touching story line. I did cry several times listening to survivor stories and the like. I would and have recommended this movie to others.

10 words or less: Very touching and moving story.

Sky High

View Date: 6/14/06 (most recent)

I love this movie, and watch it every time it comes on. This is a coming-of-age movie with a super hero theme the whole family enjoys. It has teen and young adult actors for both sexes to enjoy, a very cute story line, and some great adult actors as well. I have probably watched this movie at least 25 times and still enjoy it. I highly recommend this movie, even if you are not a fan of fantasy or don't have kids around.

10 words or less: Great fun for the whole family.

Pineapple Express

View Date: 6/14/09

I'm not quite sure why this movie was so raved about by critics, viewers, etc. It was OK, but it seemed to really drag at times. I really like both Seth Rogan and James Franco, and the acting was sufficient. I will admit, the car chase when his leg is through the windshield was hilarious and I just couldn't stop laughing the entire scene. But overall, I don't think it lived up to the hype.

10 words or less: Not sure what all the fuss was about.

My Best Friend is a Vampire

View Date: 6/13/09

This is a movie from circa 1986, and was one of Robert Sean Leonard's pre-Dead Poet's Society films. For being an 80's movie and seeing it over 20 years later, this movie wasn't as bad as others I've seen. I wouldn't say it stood the test of time, but it it was definitely not as bad as it could have been. That could be because it was a fun teen romance with vampires and the obligatory vampire hunters. As teh title indicates, a teen gets turned to a vampire and subsequently gets hunted a rather inept professor and his bumbling sidekick. The movie does keep true to much of the standard vampire mythology, such as adversions to garlic and the like, but also strays in other respects, including going out in daylight. Overall, this movie, although I originally picked it for starring Robert Sean Leonard, was pretty cute.

10 words or less: Not a must see, but fun.

South Street Diner

Dining Date: 6/13/09

This is a diner located on South Street in Philadelphia. It is close to the end of South Street close to the river, which isn't nearly as crowded as the rest of the street. This was a great find when I was looking for a dinner location one night after a long day of work and a seriously delayed public transportation system. This diner has all you could want for VERY reasonable prices, and everything we have eaten there has been fantastic. Most meals also include sides and dessert, as well as sometimes salads. The cakes are marvelous. I have been to many diners, and this is definitely one of the better ones.

Texas Roadhouse

Location: Montgomeryville, PA
Dining Date: 6/12/09

We went to this steakhouse for our standard Friday night dinner eating out. For being a Friday night and having a full parking lot, our wait was not outrageous, and we were seated within about 20 minutes of our arriving. To keep you occupied during your wait, they had large barrels of peanuts available that you could eat and leave the shells on the floor. The place was huge, much bigger than it looked from the outside. And yet, you are also given lots of room, so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of the next group. It was noisy, but typical of a steakhouse on a Friday night, and not overwhelmingly so so we could still converse. The temperature in the restaurant was also nice, where it was not too hot but not cold enough that you froze.

When you are seated, they bring you freshly baked rolls with cinnamon honey butter. The flavored butter was a very nice change from the standard. For a steakhouse, the menu had a large selection of items. Other members of my family really enjoyed the combo options, while I enjoyed the options for steaks. Unfortunately, I did not review vegetarian options, so I am unsure what is available on that front.

We started off with a Baby Cactus Blossom, which I was very disappointed in. I have had a lot of these type of appetizers, and this tasted very similar to one that I made at home. The batter was not seasoned enough, and the sauce needed less mustard and more horseradish. Many other restaurants have better. Next came the salads. Both the Caesar and the house salads were quite good, and the homemade dressings were very tasty. One item of note was that the house salad came with hard-boiled egg, which is quite unusual in my experience. The sirloin was fantastic, as was the pulled pork. The ribs fell right off the bone. The sides were very good, but the beans were very chili-like.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience, and we will probably frequent this restaurant again.

10 words or less: Very good, will go back.

My Life in Ruins

This was a very cute movie starring Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She played her typical character of a woman of Greek heritage, but this time she was living in Greece and working as a tour guide. The scenery was beautiful, with gorgeous shots of ruins, seas, shopping areas, and more. Richard Dreyfus had an excellent character as the funny guy Irv who gives sage advice, plays matchmaker, and even gets a little action himself with a fun blue pill made by Pfizer.

The story line may have been somewhat typical, with the girl getting the guy in the end and everything working out OK. There were some very funny scenes, and also some heartwrenching ones. It made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. While this was a chick flick, I believe most guys would get a kick out of it too, if they could be convinced to see it.

10 words or less: See this movie for a good laugh.

The Please Touch Museum

For The Please Touch Museum, which we visited on Saturday, I will be sharing my reviewing duties with my almost 7 year old daughter. We went on 6/13/09.

Rae: The first thing I'm going to tell you is Shop Rite I liked the little carts.
Once you get in the museum you can get some tickets to go on the merry-go-round.
There is a center that has McDonald's, where I got a cheeseburger and mom had the tomato. I didn't know that there could be monkey bars in a museum. At the gift shop, I got jacks and silly putty. We got to see the hand and torch of the Statue of Liberty made out of junk.

10 words or less:it was a realy fun place to play at.

Jen: This is an enjoyable children's museum in Philadelphia. The parking is relatively cheap for the city if you purchase a ticket. There is also ample free parking along the road in front of the museum. Everything in the museum, save the fire escapes, can be played with. This is probably one of the few places where children's tickets should be more expensive than adult tickets, but everyone over 1 pays the same price. We went two hours before closing, and it was exactly the right amount of time. Their new location was nice and roomy, and quite beautiful inside and out. Rae really seemed to enjoy herself, and that is what it was all about.

10 words or less: With kids, go at least once.

Party Monster

This is an independent film about the original club kids in New York starring Macauley Caulkin and Seth Green. I had seen this movie before and thought it was both disturbing and really well done at the same time. This movie is very visually stimulating to try to bring to life the club scene as well as the drug effects. It can be a bit mind-boggling when viewing it for the first time. With this viewing, I was able to absorb more and really understand what was going on because I had already seen the visuals and wasn't as overwhelmed by them. For what this movie was, I thought it was very well acted and had an excellent cast. I wouldn't necessarily watch this with my parents, and definitely not with my child, but I would watch it again. You can't help but be shocked at this stranger-than-fiction tale.

10 words or less: Really captures the story in the visuals.

Waitress

This was a really cute movie starring Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion. First of all, I adore Nathan Fillion and have really enjoyed everything he is in. This movie was no exception. It had a cute plot, and some really funny moments as well. It also had some moments that absolutely made me cringe, not because they were bad but because I wanted to kill or hit or otherwise do bodily harm to one of the characters. Andy Griffith had a really nice role as a curmudgeon that you warm to progressively throughout the film, as does Keri Russell's character. I laughed out loud several times, and generally just really enjoyed this movie.

10 words or less: Well done. Definitely recommended.

SYTYCD

This year's dancers are, in my opinion, so much better as a group than any other year. I usually have a few favorites by now, but it's really hard to narrow it down this year. Overall, I do think both America and the judges made the right decisions.

10 words or less: Right decisions. Look forward to next week.

Top Chef: Masters (Bravo)

Where's Padma? Where's Tom? Also, I didn't realize that that they would only be showing 4 chefs per episode, at least for the early episodes. I'll wait and see how this works out.

Group 1: Tim, Hubert, Christopher, Michael

Quickfire Challenge (dessert): I think it's kind of funny that Hubert prepared the most extravagant dish with the most high-brow taste menu, and yet the kids gave him the best score.

Elimination Challenge (college meal): I'll tell you, watching the chefs shop was probably one of the funniest moments on Top Chef. Also, actually cooking in a dorm room is a little odd. But the chefs did seem to pull it off. Hubert rightly won the challenge and is moving on.

10 words or less: A little confused, but will wait and see.

SYTYCD

Yay! I have caught up on all of my reviews for the past week or so, and finally get to review my current viewings. For SYTYCD, I will be combining my opinions with my mother's as we discuss each routine while watching.

General comments: (Mom) Mary did a lot of screaming tonight for being the first show. Also, we can't wait to see Adam Shankman's new movie, Step Up 3D. It has a whole bunch of dancers from previous seasons, and sounds like it should be really fun. Also, we both really love Adam Shankman as a judge. He really stands up for the dancers, but will tell them when they suck, too. He makes sure to include constructive criticism when appropriate.

1. Jeanine and Phillip: This couple did a great lyrical hip-hop number. With Philip being as good and unique as he is, Jeanene really held her own. I was somewhat concerned that Philip was holding back a little, but then he really turned it on. The couple seemed to have really good chemistry together. (Mom: They look so good together, and even so much alike, that they could be married.) Definitely a memorable performance, and should get many votes.

2. Asuka and Vitolio: This couple performed a broadway routine. Technically the dancing was good, but the couple seemed to get lost in their costumes, which were somewhat distracting. They didn't seem to connect well, like they hadn't developed any chemistry together. Also, I really didn't see the story as described in the little video before it. They may be in danger tomorrow.

3. Karla and Jonathan: This couple performed a Cha-Cha. Jonathan actually really impressed, especially with the split under her legs. But other than that, the routine wasn't really that memorable, particularly when compared to the other dances this evening.

4. Randi and Evan: This couple performed a wonderful jazz routine. With Evan being a broadway dancer, the judges were a little concerned, but not us. She was very surprising in a good way. We were much more impressed with her tonight than during the auditions. Very strong performance, and they should be safe.

5. Paris and Tony: This couple performed a hip-hop routine that was more hard-hitting than the first dance of the night. They seemed to lose their syncronization several times, and it seemed to be more of his problem than hers. We tend to agree with the judges that, compared to the other routines tonight, this one probably will not be memorable. These two may be in trouble tomorrow night.

6. Caitlyn and Jason: (Jen: Caitlyn is not one of my favorite dancers. She just tends to rub me the wrong way.) This couple danced a Bollywood routine, which tend to be very fun numbers in general. While he did seem to outshine a little, she did better than expected. Will probably be a memorable dance for the evening, and they should be safe.

7. Janette and Brandon: (Jen: I love Brandon!!!!) This couple performed a Foxtrot. GREAT final lift. This was a beautifully danced and coreographed number. Honestly, Mary Murphy's Botox comment was one of the best of the night. Not much more say about this except that it was beauty on the dance floor, and they should be safe for this week.

8. Ashley and Kupono: This couple performed a contemporary routine about two crash test dummies. The white hair definitely takes away yet adds so much to the performance. It makes you really concentrate on what they are doing and not think about what you know of them from previous performances. The routine was almost more of a performance art piece than traditional dancing. Unlike the broadway number from earlier tonight, the story really came through in the performance.

9. Melissa and Ade: Melissa is the naughty ballerina who is surprisingly old for this show (29). This couple performed a contemporary routine. (Mom: Shades of Demitri with the open shirt. God, he's strong. I noticed him more than her.) (Jen: I want her dress.) It was just a beautiful number. he is very powerful, but he has complete control over every movement. Everything seemed to just flow, and I think the costumes really seemed to help with that.

10. Kayla and Max: This couple danced a Samba with a coreographer that has known Max since he was 14. WOW! He was supposed to be good because this this is his style, but she was an absolute firecracker. Her personality really showed through, and the costumes were amazing. His partnering skills were amazing.

10 words or less: Hope America picks the right people for the bottom.

Weeds

Viewing Completion Date:
Season 1: 6/9/09
Season 2: 11/21/09

After finally seeing this show, I now understand why it is getting all kinds of critical buzz. The story lines are very strong, and the show overall made me want to watch more. I have watched several members of the cast in other vehicles, and they seem to work really well together in this show. The characters were even well-developed in the first episode, and it was wonderful to watch them expand as the season continued. I loved the end of the last episode, with the very close and very deliberate similarities to The Godfather. To understand just how much I enjoyed watching this series, I talked about it in two different settings today.

10 words or less: Can see why it is so critically acclaimed.

The Hudsucker Proxy

View Date: 6/9/09

I realize that this movie is quite old, but I had never seen it before last night. The casting was excellent, and I really enjoyed the brief appearance by Coen brother usual Steve Buschemi. Some parts had me absolutely laughing out loud, while other parts dragged a little. Good story line and great characters.

10 words or less: Another good movie by the Coen brothers.

The King of Kong

View Date: 6/8/09

The King of Kong is a documentary about people who try to beat the world's highest scores on classic video games, such as Donkey Kong, Asteroid, etc. As evidenced by the title of the movie, the main focus is the players of Donkey Kong.

Now, I admit, I am a huge dork, geek, nerd, or whatever your favorite term is. But these guys go WAAAAAAY beyond me. They make me look like a social butterfly, and if you know me that's saying a lot.

I'm still trying to decide if this film was really biased against one of the players, or if the guy really is a pr**k. Based on the end of the movie as well as the where-are-they-now updates provided during the credits, I am leaning toward the latter. The classic gaming world seems to be full of cliques, with the participants being almost as catty as teenage girls. It was interesting to explore this group, but definitely glad I'm not a part of it.

10 words or less: Interesting, but possibly very biased.

Get Smart

View Date: 6/8/09

This movie definitely has its funny moments. I especially like Anne Hathaway in this movie, as she shows real comedic talent. Steve Carrell is one of the more understated of today's main movie comedians. The Rock (Dwayne Johnson will always be The Rock to me) has definitely improved his acting skills, and also has a real knack for comedy. Parts of the movie really seemed to drag on to me, though. Also, I picked up some references that I know were in teh original series, even though it was not a show that I watched. I'm somewhat interested in what I missed not having been a fan of the original, or more like being too young to have seen it during its original airing.

10 words or less: Decent movie, but not a favorite.

iCarly (Nickelodian)

This is a show that my husband and I began watching with our daughter, and has since become a family favorite. It is a show that we can all agree on, and even go out of our way to look for it. The three main kids are really cute and talented, and personally I really like Spencer, Carly's older brother. If you have kids, I highly recommend this show. It is a great alternative to today's cartoons. We watch this show almost daily.

10 words or less: If you have kids, check this out.

The Tony Awards

View Date: 6/7/09

This was my first time in several years that I had been able to watch the Tony Awards, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The performances were excellent, as always. I really liked that they also showed performances showing in places other than New York, which I really felt brought theater closer to the masses. Neil Patrick Harris, in his second role of the weekend for me, showed that he is not just another former teen star but truly has talent coming out of his ears.

10 words or less: NPH added much to the show. The right people won.

The Simpsons Movie

View Date: 6/7/09

As a long-time fan of The Simpsons, I originally saw this movie in theaters. It was great seeing the well-known characters on the big screen, when we all knew them for almost two decades in their televised forms. The movie was essentially a super-long episode, which is exactly what most fans of The Simpsons wanted. More complicated, goofier schemes could be explored since the movie was approximately three times as long as a standard episode. This just led to more Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie goodness.

On a side note, when the movie was about to be released to theaters, there was a big 3D display at our local movie theater. My then 5-year-old daughter, who has been raised watching The Simpsons since birth, went over to the display and sat on the couch with the characters. She hugged Marge and Lisa, said hi to Homer and Maggie, and then punched Bart. I guess that shows which characters she likes best. Both times I have seen this, I watched it with my daughter, and both times we enjoyed it immensely.

10 words or less: Just as fun the second time around.

The Moats

Venue: Peabody's Irish Pub in Havertown, PA

This is a local band in the Philadelphia area that have been together off and on since the early 1990’s. What is even better is that I know these guys personally, because I went to high school with them. It was great catching up with the guys, and even better seeing them play for the first time in over a decade. They played both original pieces and cover songs, and both were done very well. These guys definitely have talent, especially for having day jobs.

10 words or less: Catch a show if you get the chance.

Live Free or Die Hard

View Date: 6/6/09

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. When I mentioned that to my husband, he said, “Of course, because it’s a Die Hard movie.” But it was more than that. Bruce Willis still has what it takes to make action movies, unlike some other stars out there. Justin Long was a great addition playing a geek with some street smarts, and the appearance by Kevin Smith was perfect. You do have to suspend your disbelief during several parts, particularly the big stunt scenes. Still, I was so glad I saw this. I was commenting out loud throughout the movie, with verbal gasps and “they did not just do that”-type phrases.

10 words or less: Don’t miss this.

Becoming Jane

View Date: 6/6/09

I definitely didn’t enjoy this movie as much as I thought I would. Don’t get me wrong. It was beautifully done, very well acted, and a competent period piece. I really enjoy Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy as actors. I can’t even put my finger on why I didn’t really like it, but it seems to have rubbed me the wrong way.

10 words or less: Disappointed. Skip it.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

View Date: 6/5/09

This was actually a really fun movie. Just like the first, it was a lot better than I expected. Lots of fun gags, and Neil Patrick Harris was unbelievably hilarious. It was a great way to spend a few hours without needing to be in the mood for serious drama or even cerebral comedy.

10 words or less: Fun way to spend a few hours.

Into the Wild

View Date: 6/5/09

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie because of how much I like the book. I must say, the movie did not disappoint. The acting was wonderful, and I think Emile Hirsch was a perfect choice for the main character. The scenery was gorgeous. While Sean Penn did change the story somewhat, he kept the main plot points as they were in the book. Even the music worked fantastically well, with Eddie Vedder’s voice gritty enough to suit the wild Alaskan wilderness. Overall, I highly recommend this movie.

10 words or less: Really good. Wish I had seen it in theaters.

College Road Trip

View Date: 6/4/09

This movie was OK, but nothing special. Not the best I've seen of this type of movie, but definitely not the worst either. There were definitely some funny moments, but overall it was pretty average. I wouldn't recommend paying to see it, but not a horrible way to spend an hour and a half.

10 words or less: No too bad.

SYTYCD (Fox)

View Date: 6/4/09

Unfortunately, I liked many more guys this year than girls, and there just wasn't enough room in the top 20 for everyone who deserved to be there. The biggest crime of the night was that both brothers didn't make it. Tap is once again not represented. However, the judges and producers probably did have the best dancers to choose from in all of the seasons of the show. I really hope some of the guys who got cut come back out next year.

10 words or less: Can't wait 'til next week to see them really dance.

Henry Rollins Uncut: New Orleans, South Africa, Northern Ireland

View Date: 6/4/09

I really enjoy Henry Rollins' spoken word presentations. For the spoken word portions of this piece, it was fantastic as usual. Henry also interviewed native people from each area he visited to find out more about their everyday lives. While those parts were interesting, some individual interviews did drag on a little long. I really listened to this more than watched it, but some parts had me trying very hard and mostly failing to stifle laughing out loud at work.

Review in 10 words or less: Very good, and can be listened to without losing anything.

Blushing Bloopers

View Date: 6/3/09

Thought I would enjoy this collection of goofs and bloopers, mainly consisting of sexual humor and cursing during flubbed lines. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. There wasn't even an introduction to the collection, the video and sound quality were quite poor, and it was all around lousy. I realize that the clips were very old, which could account for the quality issues. However, even the more recent shows featured (MASH, The Carol Burnett Show) were hard to watch.

10 words or less: Other blooper clip shows are better.

So You Think You Can Dance aka SYTYCD (Fox)

View Date: 6/3/09

I love Vegas week, but they are being incredibly tough this year. Rightly so, but I'm not quite understanding why they aren't having more people dance for their life, especially people like Natalie who were consistent favorites. It doesn't really matter, though. I am a huge fan of dance, and a huge fan of this show. No matter what happens, I will be watching all season.

10 words or less: LOVE IT!

Life Class

Author: Pat Barker
Completion Date: 6/3/09

I just finished listening to this book, and it took me a really long time to get through this. I actually had to listen to the first disk of this book more than once to try to understand it. However, once I got about half way through, once the romance really picked up, the story was much easier to understand. But I don't think that it was just the romance that improved the book, because that was actually present in the first portion. However, it really picked up more when the war came to the forefront of the story, and how that changed everyone's lives. It was especially poignant because the main characters were artists, and the changes were very dramatic for them in particular. Overall, it was OK, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to others.

10 words or less: Leave it unless you're already a fan of the author.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

View Date: 6/2/09

I enjoyed this movie as much as I expected I would. I have enjoyed John Cameron Mitchell in everything I've seen him in, especially his interviews. And I can totally see why various bands are covering the songs from this movie. This movie is definitely not for the faint of heart nor the sexually repressed. John Cameron Mitchell is brilliant as Hedwig, and he definitely wrote and directed an excellent film. The music really worked in the story line, and the story progressed through the use of song. This movie is the epitome of the modern musical, along the lines of RENT (which gets some great references throughout the movie). It is smart, funny, unique, and campy in a good way exactly when appropriate. JCM is a huge talent, and I look forward to seeing and hearing much more from him. He is truly a unique voice today. This movie could have devolved into purely a drag show, but it showed so much more. It reminds us that everyone has a story that influences who we are, but we are all people in the end. And the sing-along segment made the movie just that much better.

Review in 10 words or less: Fun, unique, compelling, campy yet touching.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death

View Date: 6/2/09

I had been a fan of the show when it was shown on the SciFi channel. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to view it unedited on its original channel, so I don't know how much was cut when I was watching it. There was quite a bit of bad language in the movie, but that may have been how the show was. This was a really good story line. Henry Ian Cusick played a delishly devilish reaper afer Rube passed over. It was a shame that Mandy Patinkin didn't return, but the original cast members reprised their roles to perfection. I also really enjoyed the comic book excerpts shown at the beginning, then periodically thoughout. Felt basically like an extended episode. All in all, very well done, and great to see again.

Review in 10 words or less: Good viewing for fans of the series.

Viewing for June 1, 2009

I picked some really bad movies to watch today. Luckily, I interspersed them with good ones. Also, so you don't think that all I do is watch movies and TV, I am currently working on two books, one as a hard copy and one on audio. I will report on them when I finish. Likewise, for series available on Netflix, I will generally report on them once I have completed the entire set. However, there may be some exceptions to this.

Mr. Woodcock

Woodcock is a very appropriate name for this movie. It was awful. I think I cracked a smile once through the movie, which is really bad for something claiming to be a comedy. I really like most of the actors who starred in it, but it just didn't work. Definitely one to skip.

Review in 10 words or less: Waste of an hour and a half.

Night At the Museum

This was a fun movie filled with a spectacular cast and a delightful story line. Such a huge cast of over-the-top comedians, and all of the characters worked really well together. Yet, in spite of the talent, the animals really stole the show. Loved seeing T. Rex as a dog playing fetch with its own rib. Also, a really nice twist with the stolen tablet story. While this movie is made for families, it is truly enjoyable for adults alone because of the wonderful comedy involved. Also, very nice for history buffs. While I have not checked all of the facts, the general ideas follow the history we were taught. One of the other parts of the film I really enjoyed was how Ben Stiller's character used the information he learned by doing research on his wards.

Review in 10 words or less: Lots of fun for kids and adults alike.

Fast Forward

Bad 80's fashion. Bad 80's music. Bad 80's dancing. Kids from Ohio travel to New York, learn the latest dance moves, and suffer through living young dancers for a few weeks. I was expecting a lot more from this film. I think I have loved every musical I have ever seen. I'm a huge fan of dance movies, and teen dramas regarding struggles for making it in the world. But this was just really bad. The plot was predictable, and everything worked out for the good guys in the end. The movie was made in 1985, and I believe it was trying to milk the musical scene that was huge at that time, and it just didn't work. Sidney Poitier (who directed), should be embarrassed to have his name associated with this film. Perhaps I am being too harsh of a critic on this one, as I am watching it 24 years after its initial release. But this movie did not stand up to the test of time.

10 Words or less: Skip it. Very disappointing.

I watched some Henry Rollins Uncut in South Africa, which is part of a series. I just love Rollins, and it was a great way to enjoy the end of the night after some really crappy movies. It was also a show I could listen to while writing this up, as you don't have to watch every second of it to enjoy it. I'll give a final review once I've finished the entire series.

MTV Movie Awards

View Date: 5/31/09

Worse than I remembered, I wound up turning it off about half way through. The best part about the show was the new summer movie clips they showed during the broadcast. Twilight pretty much cleaned up on the awards as expected. Eminem got mad and left, but at least it was after he performed. I think I'm just getting way too old for it.

Review in 10 words or less: See the movie clips online. Skip the show.

Indie Sex

View Date: 5/31/09

This is a series which I streamed off of Netflix. The series consists of four segments, three of which are available streaming (Censored, Teens, and Extremes). Overall, I really enjoyed this series. The people interviewed were not only informed but also entertaining. All had been involved in at least one of the movies discussed if not several. I additionally enjoyed the interviews with the directors and writers who are pushing the limits for showing sex in the movies. I have already discussed this series with several people and would recommend it for adults interested in the history of cinema, particularly those not squeemish, as the individual sex scenes being discussed are often shown so the viewed can fully understand the commentary.

Review in 10 words or less: Very informative yet enjoyable. Keep kids and prudes away.

The Jane Austen Book Club

View Date: 5/31/09

I had previously listened to the book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was available On Demand for free, so I suggested to my mother that we watch, and then I could take it off my Netflix queue as well. It was so much better than I remember the book being. The casting was incredible. The actors chosen totally captured the characters, and you could really feel their interactions and relationships. But I think the thing that was most surprising about the movie to me was the humor. I don't remember there being that much humor in the book. I made sure to pause and rewind to not miss a second, which is somewhat unusual for me and movies these days. While the emotional moments might be considered a little weak by some, the humor was unexpected and outstanding. I am not a fan of Jane Austen, but I did enjoy this film. I would recommend it to most women, as well as couples looking for a romantic movie yet funny enough for the guys to enjoy also.

Review in 10 words or less: Wonderful casting. Surprisingly funny. Better than the book.
