Whip It!

View Date: 10/4/09

This movie, starring Ellen Page, is Drew Barrymore's first directing attempt. It is about a young woman who finds both a passion and a talent for roller derby, yet whose mother wants her to participate in beauty pageants. She joins the worst roller derby team in the league and becomes the leagues star, all behind her parents back. Once her parents find out, all hell breaks loose, as is usually the tale.

I really enjoyed this movie, as did my family. Sure, it was a little hokey and the overall story a little stale, but the energy and the action really made this film stand out. Another significant aspect of this movie was the soundtrack. Evidently, there were 75 songs in 111 minutes of the movie, yet none overpowered the story. Ellen Page was perfect for the lead role, and Juliette Lewis made one of the biggest impressions. I did come to a conclusion about Drew Barrymore: no matter how much I like her, she really isn't a very good actress.

Overall, I really enjoyed this and will probably watch it again in the future.

10 words or less: Strong, ruthless women are hot!
